Message from the Vice Chancellor

goldstein-2020.jpgWelcome to the Susan and Henry Samueli College of Health Sciences! The college is comprised of three schools, one planned school, and the Susan Samueli Integrative Health Institute, creating a first-of-its-kind alliance across the disciplines of medicine, nursing, pharmacy & pharmaceutical sciences, and population & public health. The college and UCI Health, our healthcare delivery system, are dedicated to improving the human condition through the best in education, research, and care.

As an academic health system, our mission maxim is “Discover-Teach-Heal.”  The approach we use to pursue the mission has established UCI as the first university in the nation to adopt an integrative health approach across our schools, programs, and clinics.

Integrative health is patient-centered – the patient-practitioner relationship is a partnership where shared respect and empathy direct the course to recovery, health, and wellbeing. Caregivers from different health disciplines work in interprofessional teams and value multiple perspectives; conventional and complementary treatments are investigated and offered when proven to be effective; individuals and communities are empowered to make lifestyle changes that prevent and treat disease. This patient-centered, prevention-focused, team-based, and community-wise strategy is transforming the way we discover, teach, and heal for optimum health and lifelong wellbeing.

The college is a pipeline for talented students who want to fulfill their American dream through careers in health. In this way, UCI is generating the skilled, diverse California healthcare workforce of the future. Caregivers will know how to work in teams, how to prevent disease across communities, and how to offer best-in-class, personalized care when illnesses arise.

The college is also a seat of advanced, world-changing health research. Our impact is achieved through collaboration across the college, UCI Health, our health-related institutes and centers, prestigious UCI schools for engineering, biological sciences, information and computer sciences, law, humanities, arts, and the UCI Beall Applied Innovation center. UCI health research contributions have been especially critical during the COVID-19 pandemic, advancing the wellbeing of our community, the state and the nation. It is interdisciplinary synergy that allows UCI to translate discovery into care and that has made the difference between life and death during this healthcare crisis.
